The ‘Land van Belofte’ (Land of promise) project has been completed in the very heart of Schiedam. The project consists of apartments, urban housing, and shops around a semi-open inner garden. Nothing had been built on this location for more than fifty years, with just the tram to Rotterdam and the weekly market being the only life in the area. Since 2002, the ‘Land van Belofte’ has formed the new point of entry to the old town centre. Two towers of dwellings, including work spaces or studios, are located on Boterstraat and Kreupelstraat. The entrance to the work spaces are at street level, while the residential parts can be reached from the inner areas. The imposing character of the 18th and 19th-century warehouses can be found in the new facades; buildings of two and three storeys alternate with each other and are enhanced with hoisting hatch type windows. Elements like hoisting beams, French balconies and steel awnings complete the overall impression. The detached residential block between Boterstraat and Herenstraat contains five spacious dwellings with gardens and two residences with ancillary office space.
