Launched in 1939, the Richelieu was the lead ship in a class of 8x15inch-gunned battleships. The all-forward main gun arrangement was designed to save weight of armour. In 1940, she was one of the French fleet at Mers el-Kabir which was attacked by a British force attempting to prevent it being turned into German hands. An aerial torpedo severely damaged the ship. Two months later, during the defence of Dakar against British and free French forces, a shell blowback damaged two of the battleship's own main guns. The Richelieu did subsequent war service with the British Home Fleet and then with the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. After the war she served as a training ship and as transport for the French president. Placed in reserve in 1958, she was scrapped ten years later. #battleship #cuirassé #French #Jean_Bart #marine #navy #Richelieu #turrets #warship #World_War_II
