Pre-1930s Former Chicago Post Office Building

Scott S.
This is one of the few remaining examples of Post Offices from before the 1930s in Chicago. As discussed on the website www.forgottenchicago.com, many Post Offices seen today were built during the 1930s and featured the typical deco/modernist style of the Works Progress Administration. Prior to that time period, Post Offices were less standardized, but tended to adopt a more classically-inspired form. That form can be seen in this building in the triangular top and faux-column facade. That it was a Post Office is indicated by the Pony Express logo seen at the top center, which was the symbol of the Post Office Department (as the Postal Service was known at the time). The building is currently home to the Just Christ Ministries church and outreach program, and, apparently, to rental apartments on the second floor. #1930s #Chicago #Greater_Grand_Crossing #Just_Christ_Ministries #Post_Office #Post_Office_Department #preWPA #South_Side #Woodlawn #Works_Progress_Administration
