Flanders Opera / Antwerp Tower, Antwerp

Chris D.
Description
The building of the Antwerp opera house was commissioned in 1899 by the then burgomaster of Antwerp, Jan Van Rijswijck, as a match for the French Opera in what is now the Bourla theatre. Built between 1904-1907, the architects of the Neo-Baroque building were Alexis Van Mechelen and E. Van Averbeke. In 2004-2007 there was a major renovation. The theatre has the shape of an amphitheatre and seats 1006 people. Counting 24 floors and rising 87 meters, the Antwerp Tower is the second tallest office building in Antwerp. The tower has been built in 1974, and is not considered as a successfull venture by everyone. There is a shopping gallery and the wings adjacent to the opera offer lodging to a hotel (eastern wing) and apartments (western wing). There are plans to provide the Antwerp Tower with a new façade. #Alexis_Van_Mechelen #Antwerp #Antwerp_Tower #Antwerpen #Belgie #Belgium #België #E_Van_Averbeke #Flanders_Opera #Flemish_Opera #highrise_building #Jan_Van_Rijswijck #NeoBaroque #neobarok #office_building #Opera #opera_house #Vlaamse_Opera
