Old Prince Albert Library

Old Prince Albert Library

Jonathan S.
This building was the Prince Albert public library from 1951-74. However, the building was originally built as a Men's Club in 1912. From 1919 until 1927 the building was used by the Saskatchewan Provincial Police and then an RCMP branch office for a few years. It was then used by the Department of Natural Resouces from 1932 until 1949. After remaining vacant for a year the library moved in. The building was used in this capacity until 1974, when the library moved to its new building at 125 12th Street East. Over the next three decades, the building was used by a variety of businesses and institutions including real estate and two school district offices. It is now privately owned and undergoing renovations. As a library, the building was notable as being the first Regional Library in western Canada. It was also unique as perhaps the only such building with both a wine cellar and prison cells in the basement! #downtown #heritage #library #mens_club #Prince_Albert #Saskatchewan
