Háskóli Íslands Aðalbygging (University of Iceland Main Building)

wurzeller
The University of Iceland Main Building opened in 1940 as its first purpose-built accommodation. Prior to this, the state-funded university, founded in 1911, was housed in the Alþingishúsið (Icelandic Parliament building). Money to construct the Aðalbygging came from the university lottery, which remains a source of funds for expansion today. The building forms the centrepiece of the main university campus off Suðurgata, close to central Reykjavík. It houses administrative offices and part of the humanities department. The University is the single largest workplace in Iceland and has 9000 students. The building was designed by Icelandic state architect Guðjón Samúelsson in an Art Deco style. #academic #administration #art_deco #flagpoles #grey #humanities #iceland #lottery #main_building #parliament #reykjavik #university
