Ship John Shoal Lighthouse

Ship John Shoal Lighthouse

J. Wallace
This lightstation takes its name from the wreck of the freighter "John" on Christmas Eve, 1797. The structure was built starting in 1874; however, the actual lighthouse was not installed until three years later. The original structure for this station was sent to Southwest Ledge, near New Haven, Connecticut; this structure was displayed during the 1876 Centennial Exposition. The large platform was built in the early 1900s to hold fuel drums and the fog signal; the original building was far too cramped for that. The station was automated in 1973 and fully restored between 1989 and 1990. #aid #bay #beacon #boat #caisson #cape #cargo #delaware #ferry #freight #helical #house #lamp #lantern #lens #lewes #light #lighthouse #marine #maritime #may #nautical #navigation #new_jersey #ocean #pennsylvania #philadelphia #river #sea #ship #signal #station #to #tower #water #waterway #way #wilmington
