Our interpretation of the Red Hill Mine focuses on deep lead mining from 1857-8 and illustrates the developmental link between the early, surface alluvial mining of our Diggings and the quartz mining which continued into the 20th century.
The surface display shows the building and plant typical of a deep lead alluvial mine, including a poppet head, engine house, boiler, steam engine, winder, beam pump and puddler. As visitors enter the mine and follow the underground drive, they will find displays illustrating how men worked and the equipment they used in the slimy mud of the deep leads. One special holographic display re-creates the excitement of finding the Welcome Nugget.
