Preobrazenje – Transfiguration of Christ Monastery
Preobrazenje monastery is situated on the right bank of the river Morava, on the south side of Ovcar. The old monastery was on the left bank. The first written mention dates back to 1525. Nobody knows what it looked like; it was probably ruined and deserted around 1690. It was rebuilt in 1811. The church was single-nave, modest in proportions, without a dome, with a semi-circle altar apse and rectangular chancels on the north and south side of the naos. It was painted in 1816, and pulled down in 1911 because of the railway construction works.
The new monastery was built in 1940. The church is square based, with a dome and semi-circle apse. Only the dome and the altar were fresco painted. The iconostasis is from 1940 and it was made by Ivan Meljnikov from Bitolj. Preobrazenje is a monastery now and it celebrates Transfiguration of Christ on 19th August. #gorge #kablar #klisura #monastery #ovcar
