I came across this monument in a cemetery in a south Chicago suburb many years ago. (Hopefully I can update the location for Google Earth). I made measurements as far up as I could (total height calculated via shadow). This obelisk is made from polished black granite, only available from Cold Springs, Minnesota at the time. The subtle details of base washes & classicly inspired cavetto-topped chamfered plinth are beautiful. Such an impressive monument in very expensive materials are remarkable for a memorial 150-years old in a rural community.
