Berkeley Castle

Berkeley Castle

Andrew Francis
Construction of Berkeley Castle began in 1,117AD and the keep was completed by Robert Fitzharding in 1,153AD. It was one of the numerous castles built along the Welsh border (March Castles) to keep the English in. King Edward II was imprisoned and murdered here (1,327AD) and reputedly met his end with a red hot poker (or was it the other way round?). It is the oldest castle in England to be in continuous occupation and remains with the Berkeley family to this day. #Berkeley #Castle #England #Gloucestershire #UK
