Tabernacle Baptist Church was organized in 1819 and is the oldest Baptist congregation in Utica. Its building, located at the corner of Hopper and King Streets, has stood since the 1860s. The sanctuary building, at the north end of the lot, was dedicated on September 13, 1866. This neo-gothic structure is constructed of red sandstone, features a highly visible 133 foot spire, and provides seating for 500. In 1899 an organ, manufactured by the Steere Organ Co. of Springfield, MA, was added. This instrument was subsequently expanded by the Buhl Organ Co. of Utica and today includes 40 ranks. Tabernacle Baptist Church’s educational building, Thorn Chapel, is located at the south end of the lot. This facility is constructed of red brick and was erected 1905. It houses a large auditorium with stage, offices, kitchen, meeting rooms and classrooms.
Tabernacle Baptist Church is a vibrant, growing, and active congregation. We are young and old and middle aged. We are longtime residents of the Mohawk Valley and recently arrived refugees from Burma. We live in urban neighborhoods, suburban subdivisions, and small towns. We are a diverse congregation affiliated with the American Baptist Churches/USA that finds its unity in our calling to be the people of God. We offer opportunities for worship, learning, and service for all ages. We invite you to join us! #baptist #church #mohawk_valley #Tabernacle #thorn_chapel #utica
