Zirconium is the chemical element of atomic number 40. Its symbol is Zr. It is a gray-to-white transition metal whose appearance resembles that of titanium. It is mostly made of zircon and is very corrosion-resistant. Metallic zirconium alloys are largely used in nuclear plants due to the low absorption section for neutrons, both as a nuclear fuel coating and in the core support structures, and also because of their corrosion resistance in water.
