Sovereign Hill - Fire Brigade

Sovereign Hill - Fire Brigade

Tom D.
In an 1850’s gold mining town, crowded with tents and wooden buildings with open fireplaces, oil lamps and candles, fire was a constant danger. This engine house is based on a photograph of a local fire station in the mid 1860’s. There is an original Shand Mason pumping engine housed inside. Fire engines in Victorian days were given names. The Ballarat Fire Brigade appropriately named theirs Aquarius, after the Zodiac sign for water.
