THE LENS

THE LENS

STRand
The modern world is a place of multiplicity and speed. THE LENS creates a sense of home by standing against these tendencies and gravitating toward the simple. The idea of reduction is carried throughout the project and on many scales. The house is comprised of only four rooms a kitchen, main living space, bedroom and bathroom. The material is, with the exception of a large wooden kitchen island, exclusively concrete. The views are focused as well. One façade is given to the bay and surrounding hills. Another contains apertures allowing differing views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The reduced nature of THE LENS allows the world to become present again. The concrete floor and walls become a backdrop for the play of light through the apertures. Light will move across these surfaces throughout the day and will change with the seasons. The numerous openings will also allow fragrant breezes of San Francisco's mild climate to enter the space frequently. Beyond the glass façade is a roofed, but unenclosed space for a quiet evening outdoors or for resting on as you dip your feet into the pool and gaze over the bay. Concrete pads permit passage over the pool towards the waters edge. #competition #designyourdwelling2008 #san_francisco
