Elbow of Cross Ledge, c. 1912 (mk. 2)

Description
Elbow of Cross Ledge was built between 1906 and 1910. In connection with Miah Maull Lighthouse, it replaced the old Cross Ledge light station. The sturdy brick structure nonetheless was severely damaged by a hurricane in 1951, whereupon it was automated. Two years later, a freighter rammed the station, knocking two-thirds of the superstructure into the bay and severely damaging the caisson. The wreckage was removed four days later, and a modern steel tower was built on the refurbished caisson. Ironically, Cross Ledge Light, which this structure was supposed to replace, survived another nine years after this incident. Since more architectural interest has been focused on the Delaware Bay lights, plans are in the works to replicate the original tower by 2014. This model captures the details and proportions of that planned replica. #aid #bay #beacon #boat #caisson #cape #cargo #delaware #ferry #freight #helical #house #lamp #lantern #lens #lewes #light #lighthouse #marine #maritime #may #nautical #navigation #new_jersey #ocean #pennsylvania #philadelphia #river #sea #ship #signal #station #to #tower #water #waterway #way #wilmington
