This is a collection of parts used to design autocross / gymkhana courses in scale 3D using SketchUp. I created this toolkit for my own use after becoming Autocross Chair of a regional sports car club. I hope other course designers find it useful. This collection contains components for various cones, gates, turn complexes, timing gear, worker stations, and other accessories used to lay out an autocross course. With these tools, you can lay out your course, then navigate in perspective 3D to check each area from the driver's-eye viewpoint. You can also go to parallel projection plan view to generate maps for on-site layout and for drivers' reference if desired. Start a new SketchUp model and use the geolocation tools to find your autocross site. Define an area that includes the course, grid, and paddock. This will give you an accurate, to-scale aerial image on which to design your course. Unless your site has substantial terrain differences, I recommend turning off the topography layer. I also recommend setting the drawing axes to parallel the longest axis of your site, but this is optional. Many objects have a Halo layer. This is an exaggerated graphic device that makes the cones, pointers, and other items more visible when zoomed way out or in the course map plan. Turn the layer on and off for desired visibility. There are also layers for design / layout guides, course edges, text labels, and directional arrows. I tend to turn off the design information and labels for the course map issued to drivers, leaving the halos, course edges, and arrows. I leave all the layers on except the arrows for the layout diagram, to assist in setting up the course on site. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or suggestions.
